Depending on your age — and we’re not asking! — you might remember this old-timey hit by Irving Berlin, “Heatwave.” Let’s jog your memory with a little snippet from the lyrics: “Oh! We’re having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave. The temperature’s rising, it isn’t surprising.”
Oh, except it is. It is definitely surprising when the mercury tops the thermometer for those of us living in New England. And, right now, it couldn’t rise much higher.
To add insult to injury, moving in the middle of a New England heatwave is a special kind of torture. With record-breaking temperatures sweeping our region, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead and protect yourself (and your belongings) from the heat.
Whether you’re moving across town or across the state, here’s how to keep your cool—pun intended.
1. Start Early (or Late)
Timing is everything, but never more so than when you’re moving during a NH heatwave. Pro-tip: Schedule your move for early morning or early evening hours, when the sun’s intensity is lower. Do whatever you can to avoid peak heat hours (typically between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.), if possible. Make it possible, trust us. The alternative is downright unbearable.
2. Hydration Is Non-Negotiable
Pack a cooler with cold water bottles and electrolyte drinks for everyone involved. Keep it easily accessible and offer drinks frequently, even if no one asks, and even if you don’t feel thirsty. Unfortunately, heat exhaustion can creep up quickly and it can take a while to recover from it.
3. Dress for the Weather
Wear light-colored, breathable clothing and a hat or bandana to shield from the sun. Footwear should be comfortable and cool, of course, but this is not an opportunity to wear flip flops or slides. You don’t want to risk dropping something heavy or stubbing your toe while lugging boxes. Ideally, you’ll want to swap heavy boots for comfortable, closed-toe sneakers with good traction.
4. Set Up a Cool-Down Station
If you have access to your new or old home, create a cool-down spot with fans, wet towels, and cold beverages. Take frequent breaks and rotate people out of the heat when possible. Keep in mind, moving during a New England heatwave is a marathon event, not a sprint. Treat it as such by taking your time and prioritizing health and wellness.
5. Protect Heat-Sensitive Items
As you know, electronics, candles, artwork, and even certain cleaning supplies can be damaged in extreme heat. Label and load these items last, if you can. Or just play it safe by keeping them in an air-conditioned vehicle.
6. Keep a Close Eye on Pets and Kids
When moving with kids, try to keep them in a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned space away from the moving hustle. Their heat tolerance is even lower than yours. The same is true when you’re packing up with pets.
