It’s no secret that residential moving in NH can be stressful and that added stress can leave many people feeling a little distracted, if not downright forgetful. With so many tasks to do and details to keep track of, even the most organized among us might overlook a few essentials.
Our team at CLR Movers, NH’s best moving company, is here to remind you not to leave behind these most commonly forgotten items.
1. Chargers & Cords
Not unlike a crockpot, “set it and forget it,” most of us have a dedicated charging space for our electronics. We plug in our chargers and never really think twice about it. No wonder then phone chargers, laptop cords, and extension cables are often still hanging from the wall after the packing is done.
Pro-tip: Double-check outlets and behind furniture as a final check of each room before you consider it complete.
2. Important Documents
Sounds hard to believe, but we’ve known people who have left passports, birth certificates, medical records, and insurance paperwork tucked away inside a cabinet, top shelf, or other “safe spot” that they otherwise don’t really use and, therefore, overlook.
Pro-tip: Store critical documents in a clearly labeled folder and keep them on hand where they can be easily accessed, if need be. Ensure everyone involved in your move — partner, spouse, adult children, etc, knows where these items are, just in case!
3. Medications
While daily medications aren’t typically an issue, other prescriptions or not often needed over-the-counter medications are often left in bathroom cabinets or in the small spaces under sinks.
Pro-tip: Similar to your personal documents, keep medications in a bag you can access right away. As you likely know, moving can be a headache… don’t compound it by scrambling to find your reliable pain reliever!
4. Kitchen Basics
If your kitchen has a lot of storage spaces, it can be easy to leave behind items, even small appliances, that aren’t often used. The same is true of foods in a freezer drawer or on a high shelf in a pantry.
Pro-tip: With the freshest set of eyes possible (again, we know moving can be exhausting), give the cabinets, fridge, freezer, and pantry another once over. You might be surprised by what you find!
5. Tools & Cleaning Supplies
In the process of packing, you likely needed a trusty tool or two. Don’t leave behind the screwdriver you used to take apart furniture, for instance, or the broom and mop from the final clean.
Pro-tip: Be sure to check any built-in bookcases or shelves for tools used while packing, as well as any corners or spaces behind doors that might be propping up a broom or mop.
6. Seasonal & Storage Items
Once again, it’s the infrequently used items that tend to almost conceal themselves in the background. We’ve seen everything from sports gear, lawn equipment, and holiday decorations get forgotten in basements, sheds, garages, or attics.
Pro-tip: Flip the script on your move and, rather than moving out, pretend you’re moving in, fully expecting to find totally empty spaces. Walk through each space, looking for any “surprises” along the way.
7. Toiletries & Personal Items
Similar to those prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, commonly used items like toothbrushes, hairdryers, and razors are frequently left in medicine cabinets and on the sides or corners of bathtubs.
Pro-tip: No matter what time you “finish” packing, walk into the bathroom as though you’re about to start your daily routine of getting ready. Inspect the shower and any storage spaces for anything you would need and see if it’s still there.
8. Hidden Spaces
We’re talking about those ideal spots to stash holiday or birthday gifts, whether that means in the back of closets, crawl spaces, or tucked in some corner of a basement, these “out of sight, out of mind” spots are easy to miss.
Pro-tip: Channel your inner child and go exploring. Sounds silly, but be curious about your property, no matter how long you’ve lived there. Try to think of it as a new space to be scouted and see what you might find.
Trust Us to Remember for You!
While we advise anyone managing a move on their own to create a last-minute checklist and do one final walkthrough before locking up, we’re also big believers in extra hands and eyes on a job. Let us do the heavy lifting and double-checking for you.
“We were extremely satisfied with the service. From start to finish, you made our move very comfortable. You were 100% on time (a few minutes early which is even better), professional, non-smoking, constant communication, VERY reasonable prices, and just a joy to work with. We were very impressed how well everyone worked together.”
