Moving can be mind-boggling. With so many details to keep track of, it’s only natural that one or two might end up overlooked. From what we’ve seen, these forgotten details rarely have anything to do with boxes, moving supplies, or the physical efforts required of a residential move in NH.

No, in our experience, even the most organized among us tend to overlook updating their address everywhere it matters. Missing this step can lead to lost bills, delayed packages, lapses in insurance, and even legal headaches.

So, to make life easier, we’ve created a simple, organized guide to help you update your address without the stress.

Still in the throes of packing?
Double Check for these 8 Things Most People Forget When Moving!

Start With the USPS. Read: Forward Your Mail

Your first stop should always be the United States Postal Service. Setting up mail forwarding ensures letters and packages sent to your old address are rerouted to your new home.

How to do it:

  • Visit the official USPS website or your local post office
  • Choose a start date for mail forwarding
  • Standard mail forwarding typically lasts 12 months

This step gives you a safety net while you update everything else.

Update Your Driver’s License & Vehicle Registration

Each state has its own timeline, but most require you to update your address within 30 days of moving.

You’ll need to update:

  • Driver’s license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Vehicle title (in some states)

This can often be done online through your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website. Failing to update your license can lead to fines or issues if you’re pulled over, so don’t skip this step.

Get Out the Vote: Update Your Voter Registration

If you’ve moved to a new town, county, or state, your voter registration needs to be updated so you can vote in the correct district. Many states let you update voter registration at the same time you update your driver’s license.

Two birds, one stone. We’re all about it.

Financial Institutions & Important Accounts

Next, update your address anywhere money or sensitive information is involved. Be sure to notify:

  • Banks and credit unions
  • Credit card companies
  • Investment and retirement accounts
  • Loan providers (mortgage, auto, student loans)

This helps prevent missed statements, late payment fees, fraud risks, and billing confusion.

All worth avoiding!

Insurance & Healthcare Providers

ICYMI: Your address actually affects rates, coverage areas, and emergency services, so consider this step critical.

Update:

  • Health insurance
  • Auto insurance
  • Homeowners or renters insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Doctors, dentists, and specialists
  • Pharmacies (especially for prescription deliveries)

Employer & Tax Agencies

An obvious point, but you want to make sure your paycheck and tax documents go to the right place.

Notify:

  • Your employer’s HR department
  • The IRS (especially if you move after filing taxes)
  • State tax agencies if you moved across state lines

Subscriptions & Deliveries

Sounds silly, but this is where many people slip up. Sit down and make a list, focusing on everything that arrives at your door or inbox, whether on a regular or once-in-a-bluemoon basis. Think of deliveries, courtesy of:

  • Amazon and other online retailers
  • Subscription boxes
  • Meal delivery services
  • Magazine and newspaper subscriptions (sounds old-fashioned, but they do still exist)
  • Streaming services with billing addresses
  • Pet supply autoships (your fur babies will not appreciate any oversight here)

Schools, Memberships & Community Services

If you have kids, pets, or memberships, there are a few more updates to make, including:

  • Schools and daycare providers
  • Veterinarians
  • Gyms and fitness studios
  • Professional memberships
  • Religious or community organizations

Utilities at Your Old & New Home

Few people forget to set up utilities at their new home; however, plenty neglect to fully transfer or cancel at their former address.

Make sure you’ve handled both sides of the following coins:

  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Water & sewer
  • Trash & recycling
  • Internet & cable
  • Home security systems

Quick Address Change Checklist

We get that reading over a guide is not necessarily as handy as holding an actual checklist. Here it is! We recommend printing this out, grabbing a screenshot or snapping a pic on your phone for easy reference when you need it.
